Gamma ray logging

Applications

The tool may be used to provide borehole data – such as azimuth and inclination – in directional and horizontal wells. It may also be used in vertical wells as a monitoring tool.

The optional gamma ray module is used to provide an indication of formation radioactivity, which is usually higher in clays and shales than other sedimentary rock types such as anhydrites, coal, dolomites, limestones, and sandstones.

As such, the gamma ray response is useful in defining shale beds, formation tops, and formation thickness.
